The champions in this year’s Historic Formula 2 International Series have been confirmed by the Historic Sports Car Club after a tremendous season of racing at major events across Europe.
The 2022 calendar included a return to the glorious Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit and trips to Hockenheim, Paul Ricard and Dijon as well as the Oulton Park Gold Cup and the Classic, Silverstone.
Robert Simac (France), Martin Bullock (Australia), Roland Wiltschegg (Austria), Matt Wrigley (GB) and Steve Weller (Australia) are the five class champions for 2022 in a season when more than 60 drivers, from at least 10 countries, took part in Historic F2.
The stunning Formula 2 and Formula Atlantic cars of the late 1960s and 1970s delivered an outstanding spectacle, with great racing from superbly presented cars in a sporting environment. The final race weekend of the season was held at the fabulous Dijon circuit in France, where some fine racing capped the season.
For Robert Simac it was an incredible eighth Class A title in nine years with the ex-Jean-Pierre Jaussaud March 712 that is prepared and run by Robert and his wife. Martin Bullock also had a great summer season in Europe racing the March 72B owned by Bob Birrell to win Class B while his latest Chevron project is completed. However, Bullock was only two points ahead of the March 722 of French racer Olivier Huez at the end of the year.
Austrian racer Roland Wiltschegg was another driver to enjoy an excellent season and took his Chevron B39 to the Class C title, while the very rapid Matt Wrigley topped Class D in his March 782 despite stiff opposition from the similar cars of Martin Wood and Matthew Watts.
The series is divided into five classes and there are five individual class winners rather than an overall series champion. The classes are:
Class A: Jochen Rindt Trophy: 1600cc F2 cars from up to 1971
Class B: Vern Schuppan Trophy: Formula Atlantic or Formula B cars from up to 1975
Class C: Gilles Villeneuve Trophy: Formula Atlantic or Formula B cars 1976 to 1978
Class D: Bruno Giacomelli Trophy: 2-litre Formula 2 cars from 1972 to 1978
Class E: Jim Clark Trophy: Formula 2, Formula Atlantic or Formula B cars from 1967 onwards without aerodynamic devices
Andy Dee-Crowne, CEO of the HSCC said: “It’s been a great season in Historic F2, with a very welcome return to a full European calendar. We are very proud to have Formula 2 as a flagship category for the HSCC.”
HSCC chairman Roger Bevan is also the championship chair for Historic F2. He said: “I’d like to congratulate our winners and thank every one of more than 60 drivers for supporting Historic F2. We’ve had a very, very good season and the standard of racing, particularly at the Dijon final, was a great credit to all the drivers and teams.”
