The Historic Modified Sports and Special Saloon Series will step up a gear in 2023 with a six date schedule from the Historic Sports Car Club.

After three trial events in 2022, the new series will move forward significantly next year with an expanded calendar and ever increasing competitor interest. The pilot events run during the summer and autumn this year helped bring exposure to the series and gave prospective competitors the chance to see what HMSS was all about.

In the end, a total of 14 different competitors raced suitable cars, which was an encouraging start for the first steps of a new series, which only started with early discussions last January.

The emphasis remains on pre-1980 cars and the regulations have been revised ready for 2023 and beyond and are available from the HSCC website: hscc.org.uk/championships/historic-modsports-and-saloons/

The HSCC and championship chair Steve Watton were encouraged by the feedback, commitment and competitor enquiries that the new series received. By the end of the year, more than 70 drivers had made serious enquiries about HMSS, and the Club hopes that in 2023 the series will continue to build on a steady but ever-growing basis.

A fine calendar has been organised with each two day event featuring a 15-minute qualifying session and two 20-minute races, starting at Snetterton in late April. After that, Historic Modsports and Special Saloons will race at Silverstone GP, Donington Park and Brands Hatch GP through the summer months before being part of the Croft Nostalgia meeting in early September and the HSCC Silverstone Finals meeting in mid-October.

Andy Dee-Crowne, CEO of the HSCC, said: “A new series launched in the current economic climate needs time to grow and we’re happy to make that commitment to Historic Modified Sports and Special Saloons. I’m very encouraged by the number of new enquiries and look forward to seeing the series evolve further next season.”

Watton said: “The HSCC has been unwavering in its support for the series, which is evident in the tremendous schedule of dates we have for 2023. We have established a Facebook group and have many people preparing cars for the coming season. I’d like to thank everyone for the positive response they made during the first season and look forward to continued growth next year and beyond.”
