Two races for the Historic Sports Car Club’s Historic Formula 2 Series have been added to the line-up for the Club’s International Trophy meeting on the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit (22/23 May).
Following the postponement of the Jim Clark Memorial meeting at Hockenheim in Germany (8/9 May), which was to have been the second date on the Historic F2 calendar, the HSCC has added two races for the series into its high-profile Silverstone GP event.
The stunning grid of pre ‘79 Formula 2 and Formula Atlantic cars will have qualifying and a first 25-minute race on Saturday followed by a second 25-minute race on Sunday and a strong grid is expected. The Historic F2 season opened at Donington Park on Easter Saturday with a glorious 27-car field.
It is also confirmed that the next scheduled date in Europe, the Grand Prix de France Historique at Paul Ricard (11-13 June), will sadly not now be a round of the HSCC Historic F2 Series. It is hoped that the balance of the calendar can go ahead as planned but it remains subject to the evolving COVID situation in Europe.
Andy Dee-Crowne, CEO of the HSCC, said: “Obviously the on-going problems in Europe are impacting the Historic F2 calendar, so we are pleased to confirm this new date at our Silverstone Grand Prix circuit event. However, we are very sad that we will not be joined by the European F2 racers who are such an important part of Historic F2. We very much hope to be able to race with them again later in the season.”
The May date on the full Silverstone GP circuit will also be a perfect warm-up for the HF2 contenders who will be a key part of the race line-up at The Classic, Silverstone, at the end of July.
The original International Trophy was best known as a non-championship Formula 1 race but was run for F2 cars in 1977 when it was won by French ace Rene Arnoux (Martini MK22). The last F1 International Trophy was the soaking wet 1978 race when Keke Rosberg scored his first F1 win in the Theodore. From 1979 to the end of the 2-litre Formula 2 era in 1984, the International Trophy was a round of the European Formula 2 Championship.
It is expected that spectators will be admitted to Silverstone for the International Trophy weekend and for final confirmation and more details about this please visit www.silverstone-circuit.co.uk
